Want to provide your employees with a break room that helps them recharge during the long work day, while simultaneously motivating them to achieve work goals and results? An employee break room snack bar or buffet spread is exactly what you need. Before you go about stocking your break room with eats and treats you THINK will keep your employees happy, energetic and productive, consider which foods are light and energy-boosting, and which will leave them feeling sluggish, heavy, and in need of a mid-day siesta.

At Rosseto, we know you’re in the business of doing business. You’re not a dietician and do not know offhand which foods to choose for your employee break room. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of some top foods to stock your employee break room with – and have paired them with some trade tips on how to present them in your snack bar or buffet.

Fresh produce – whole fruit, berries and cut up veg

Fresh fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber. Together, they help to cleanse and strengthen your body, while leaving you feeling light and refreshed. Plus, crunching on a whole apple or celery stick gives your jaw the satisfying feeling it needs to help you avoid empty calories found in processed foods, like chips and pretzels.

We recommend setting up your employee break room with baskets of whole fruit and a salad bar – cut up vegetables and all the accouterments plated in individual dishes on top of risers, or in cooling trays, and salad dressing options available in squeeze bottles to help prevent spills and messes. Your employees will get a kick out of DIY-ing their healthy snack, and will benefit from the burst of healthy energy these foods provide.

Dairy products – yogurts and shakes

Not all dairy products are created equal. The best ones to help boost energy and productivity are low in fat, high in calcium, contain pro-biotics and are just sweet enough to satisfy a craving, but not too sweet to cause a sugar high. For this reason, yogurt and dairy-based protein shakes are a must-have for your employee break room spread.

We recommend providing ready-packaged yogurts in an ice cooling dish or mini fridge, and supplying possible protein powders, seeds (like flax and chia) and other ingredients in bowls on risers or in dry food dispensers, that your employees can add to their yogurts, or pour into a nearby blender to make a quick shake.

Dry foods – nuts and cereal

Dry foods, like nuts and cereal, pack an energy punch in a small format, and don’t require refrigeration or heating to taste great. All you need to do is store them in dry food or cereal dispensers, or bulk bins with scoops, and provide little dishes and possible other ingredients, like milk or dried fruit, to make them taste great. You can also add a little chocolate indulgence to the mix (dark chocolate), to give your employees something they love, along with those foods that their bodies will be thankful they ate.

Hot beverages – tea and coffee

And what would an employee break room be without a place to make and sip hot beverages, like tea and coffee? Both drinks contain caffeine, and tea is a great source of antioxidants, great for helping your employees feel energized and ready to tackle the next task at hand.

We recommend setting up a separate beverage station with cold water, coffee and tea dispensers, as well as milk, creamer and sweetener. And be sure to clearly label each beverage as hot or cold, so your employees can safely dispense to their hearts’ content.
